LADYFINGERS Elaine and Steve created Ladyfingers in 1977 when they moved to the Monterey Peninsula from San Francisco. After a year, they made the big move to Carmel to compete with the 31 other jewelry stores in that ‘retail hot bed’. In 1986, after two other locations on the edge of the business district, they finally were able to move to the location they wanted. It was then that they began bringing in designer jewelry.
Always on a quest to find the right items for their clientele, they added more and more name designers. Now they represent nearly 45 of the most talented people from around the world. Some are major names and others are rising stars. Steve still makes his own creations, which are displayed with the other artists’ in the gallery.
Jewelry is an art form, and like all art it is constantly evolving -- new techniques, new designs, new materials -- it is fantastic. Elaine and Steve are always searching for the new and exciting to make the store stand apart from the competition. Their quest has given them the opportunity to travel the world meeting talented, creative and wonderful people, many of whom have become their closest friends.
They feel it is important to take a hands-on approach in running the store. Being in a tourist area, people come back year after year to our store and there is a certain comfort level the customer feels in seeing the same people there.
Now after 20 years, they feel blessed that they have been able to be a part of such a dynamic and exciting industry. They are looking forward to the next 20. It has been a wonderful ride.
Ladyfingers is located in Carmel, on Dolores near Ocean Avenue.
